Test - Design Flow Kit

Legend

Show basic legend

Learn about the use of the 12 design elements and the methods.
Click above on the basic legend from the physical kit or surf through the more extensive legend.

On the bottom of the page of each element you find some relevant ‘methods’ (yellow sticky notes). These are just examples, there is an infinite number of methods to choose from.

Methods are placed on a design element, to show where and how they are used in your design flow. A mood board for example can be used as an inspiration board to diverge or as a criterium to converge, on itself its use is not clear. As the mood board example shows us, methods are often used multiple times in a strategy.

Test

Test

Testing is necessary to know if your solutions comply or work. Testing is typically done with users from your target group, but it is not always possible. The test element is orange because in most cases you need external users to test your solution. This means you need to plan testing ahead.

What if I don’t test?
Without testing you simply don’t know whether your solution works. It might seem to work, but especially human behaviour is very unpredictable. Solutions that work for one user group, don’t work for others. Consider the whole legal system and communication, it only works for legal people.

Where in the design flow?
If you do a redesign project, it might be completely at the beginning. More often, more energy is put into testing towards the end of a project. When dealing with digital products, testing is often done early, since it is cheaper to make prototypes. It makes sense to always consider early testing. You don’t need a whole scientific approach mostly. Just light testing, just to learn how users think, get a broader perspective and check your assumptions.
One of the major differences between a design approach and the traditional approach to innovation is that you let the user guide you, instead the opinions in the board room. Testing is one of the ways to bring in the user.

Which method to use?
There is a vast number of methods available. Testing is a specialisation of its own. We can only address a few words here. It is always important to consider how viable it is that you get credible results from a test. How much resources are available for a test? Especially quantitative testing is often quite an effort. On the other hand, just showing a colleague (outside the team) a little drawing can give you a completely different insight.
Within each specialisation different ways of testing a common. Nevertheless, be open to new ways of bringing in the user into your design flow. Consider available resources (knowledge, time, budget)
