On the bottom of the page of each element you find some relevant ‘methods’ (yellow sticky notes). These are just examples, there is an infinite number of methods to choose from.

Methods are placed on a design element, to show where and how they are used in your design flow. A mood board for example can be used as an inspiration board to diverge or as a criterium to converge, on itself its use is not clear. As the mood board example shows us, methods are often used multiple times in a strategy.

In order to design a solution, it is necessary to understand the context. For whom are you designing, what solutions are already available, what is the target group, et cetera.

What if I don’t research?
You might be reinventing the wheel, you might find to have misunderstood your target user, you might miss the competition has already tried what you are trying.

Where in the design flow?
Research can be relevant at every point in the design flow. Usually, at least some research is done at the beginning, as to understand the assignment. Very much depends on where yours start. Does your assignment include what to design and for whom, or is this still to be considered? Later on, often more specific research is done, this is not always planned in advance.

Which method to use?
Take your time to consider what you will research and why. Often a lot of research is discarded later on in the project, making it a waste of time. Mostly at the beginning you research a variety of things.
